Life Drawing June 5th

Apologies for the looooong delay on updating this blog

here are the drawings from the 5th June 2016

Great job on all the drawings. Having a fuller model presents different challenges to the artist. There are less obvious bony landmarks so drawings can appear really round and lack variety in the forms. I was told to look for as much straights as possible in the model. Thankyou to richard for taking the photos and hosting the class.

Life Drawing Session 1st May 2016

May 1st 2016

Thanks for joining the 2nd class on Sunday. It was great to see some new faces joining the group. Thankyou to Andrew the model along with Richard and Rebecca for helping with the organizing.  In the next class we will start having a short group critique at the end of the session.

Here are the drawings

strong torso. Great job on feeling the weight on the stick.

great studies. It sometimes good to focus on separate body parts

great that you have 3 drawings on one,sheet of paper. Very dynamic.

line work is really nice with this. Simple but lovely lines.

A good example of the gesture block in and then started to work in the shadow shapes.

Love the composition on the paper.

the scribbled linework is very graphic.

A successful full set of drawings. I want one of them drawing cases!!

This is a beautiful drawing. A successful complete pose And the model will be happy as you have took 10 years of him.

This is a wonderful stylized drawing of the model.

beautiful soft grey midtone values.

stong bold linework.
nice full pose. I feel i could have done a better job with the face and his right knee.

The First Class Sunday 3rd April 2016

Thanks for all who came along to the first session. I'm really impressed with the quality of the drawings on display. The venue was fantastic. It was a perfect space for the drawing session. Thanks to Ben Pitt and Richard Slade helping me set up the class. And thanks to the model Andrew who did a fantastic job.

i took this home and darkened the shading. It was a great pose from the model front on.

The Form Principle

The form principle applied to a human figure - drawing by henry yan


here are some definitions :

VALUE - the range of tones from dark to light in different levels

FORM SHADOW - the shadow area that is created when a form turns away from a light source. Form shadow has soft edges

CAST SHADOW - The shadow area on a form that is created when another form blocks the light path towards it. Cast shadows has sharp edges.

CORE SHADOW - The edge of the form shadow. It is the darkest part and has soft edges.

REFLECTED LIGHT - The area of the form shadow where light is reflected back from other surfaces

MIDTONE - The Transition area between light and dark values.

LIGHT AND HIGHLIGHT. - The light areas that are closest to the light source. The highlight is the lightest area we see

SHADOW PATTERN - the shapes or shapes created by the arrangement of shadows


Here is the same logic applied to a basic sphere. Understand the principles and start applying it to your figure drawings.
